Lent is a season in which we practice preparing ourselves for new life and beginnings. Our Theme this year is ‘Under Construction: God is building here’ as we have already been exploring this year, when we build we have to prepare the land and lay strong foundations. For God to build our lives we too need to allow Him to prepare our hearts and to put strong foundations and disciplines in place. Lent is known as the great fast in the Church around the world and commemorates and exemplifies Jesus’ example where he was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness (See Luke 4:1-14). You will note that whilst Jesus goes ‘full of the Spirit’ he returns in the ‘power of the Spirit’. When we fast we give up things that are important to us in order to refocus our lives towards God. By fasting certain things we practice ‘dying to’ ourselves and by refocussing on other things we practice ‘living to’ God and allow Him to build us up to be people who walk in the power of His Spirit.
Throughout Lent we will be following an experiential calendar which suggests daily practices for fasting-from and living-to during this Lent season. We would also encourage people to ask God what they should ‘give up’ as an offering to Him for the duration of the 40 days leading up to Resurrection Sunday. The calendar is available as a print out or to download at the following link.
The daily practices on this calendar will also be put on our Facebook and Twitter.
