Monday: Pocketful of Faith
“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matt 17:20)
I don’t know about you, but I don’t like having much in my pockets, especially if I am wearing skinny jeans! Not only is it uncomfortable, it just looks kind of weird. So a mustard seed is small, not bulky. It doesn’t clamour for attention or look in anyway glamorous and yet Jesus says that this is exactly the measure of faith we need to make a difference, to even move mountains.
It is quite likely that as Jesus made this massive claim their minds would be drawn to the fact that Herod had literally moved a mountain to build his summer palace. Belief is a potent force, but only when it is put into action. It is when we empty our pockets, plant or crush the mustard seed that it will either grow or release it’s potential. As we begin this week of prayer and focus on what god is calling us to this year, let’s ask ourselves what steps of faith God is challenging us to take, what do we need to empty our pockets of to make room for what he wants to give us and what are the mountains he wants us to move, through the power of his spirit?
