16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
I am in the middle of Christmas shopping right now, preparing gifts for my many nephews and nieces, thinking about what I want to give them, thinking about what they will love and enjoy, what they will laugh at and hoping my preparations for the day will be enough. In church I’m preparing for many Christmas celebrations and for my family I’m preparing food and the house. I want our church and home celebrations to be ones of welcome, anticipation and warmth. And so it was with John the Baptist; he was sent before Jesus to prepare to way and to welcome Jesus. There was a sense of anticipation and excitement even before John was born. Let us prepare for Jesus this season. May our hearts, homes and church be widely welcoming of our coming King.
