5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
In this passage we see Jesus as both, God and man. It reminds us how Jesus humbled himself in becoming a fully-human, whilst also having the power and authority of God. These verses tell us to repeat this humility in each relationship we have, becoming servants to anyone and valuing everyone over ourselves. Jesus not only became obedient to God but also to the point of death, a type of torture so painful it the word ‘excruciating’ was born through it. What lengths are you willing to go to for your faith today? This advent, remember that we each have the power and authority of God through Jesus and our calling to empower other through servanthood. I pray that you not only humble yourself before others, but before God – remembering the true importance and significance of Christmas this year.
