December 1st – Jesus Is Promised

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

“Mum! Dad! Time to get up! Can we open our presents now?!” Bleary eyed we look up into the beaming faces of our children tugging away the bedclothes and beckoning us downstairs to open presents. Their joy and excitement seems to justify the fact that it is still the wrong side of 6:00am! “Ok… just coming…” Carolina and I will reply sleepily from the warmth of our bed.

‘Adventus’ means ‘coming’. It is the season of hope, the joyful anticipation of the good that is to come. Our kids have no doubt that there is something great waiting for them under the tree. During this time we remember that Jesus came; God fulfilled His promise! We have been set free to enjoy the amazing life God always intended for us to live. However, it doesn’t stop there. Jesus is coming again! This time it won’t be to the dust of a stable, but to the culmination of Isaiah’s amazing promise. May our hearts be full of wonder this advent as we wake up to being one day closer to seeing God’s kingdom in greater measure.
