December 11th – A Treasured Word

Luke 2:16-19

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

The shepherds didn’t doubt what they learned from the angels, but left hastily to find the baby. God chose simple men, not priests or kings, as the first to greet and announce the Son of God, and they found him at his most vulnerable. They must have excitedly spoken with Mary and Joseph of their incredible vision and this must have strengthened Mary & Joseph’s faith, confirming all they had come to believe about Jesus.

Which experiences, dreams or visions has God given you to share with others and encourage their faith? It may be something small and seemingly insignificant, but sometimes God uses simple things to confirm what He is already saying to us.

Whereas the shepherds then left to spread word, we understand that Mary did the opposite; ‘treasuring’ and ‘pondering’ in her heart what had happened. Could it be that Mary, already aware of her virtue being in question, was storing up these confirmations to bolster her faith and affirm herself in the eyes of God?

Is there a verse from the Bible or word from God that you could store in your memory today, to call upon as an encouragement to yourself in times of need?
