Day 22 – In the Beginning
John 1: 1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
I love this passage in John. It just speaks to me so much about the divinity of Jesus. It shows me how Jesus is with God but also he is God, he is the Son of God. The truth that that one verse speaks is huge. Many can’t handle it, even some Christians. Jesus has been there from the start and the birth of Jesus as a baby is only part of the story. That thought excites me so much. The life that Jesus lived on earth changed the course of humanity for ever. But he always has lived and will never stop living.
In fact, he himself is life. It says in John 14:6 ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’. Jesus gives us life, he gave us life in the beginning when he created us but also gave us life through his death on the cross, and then gave us life in his resurrection. Jesus doesn’t stop giving life, especially when we feel as though it is dark all around. Jesus is the light of the world and whoever believes in him will NEVER walk in darkness (John 8:12). We will never walk in darkness because Jesus defeated that darkness when he rose again.
Jesus lives within us, which means we have that life within us. And that life is the brightest light in this world. It shines through any darkness that we are faced with in our lives. So this has turned in to an encouragement really, lets go forward, thinking this christmas and in to the new year that we have the most powerful king living inside of us. He who was, is and who created. The light that shines so bright that death cannot contain or overcome it. Death could not defeat Jesus, and that is why he is alive in us! In a time where we are supposed to be happy, and where many people struggle with various different things, remember that we have that light, its comfort, its warmth and its embrace.
