An Anchor
October 13th, 2009
A visit last Saturday to Littlehampton’s Look and Sea Centre was a great experience as we looked after 8 of our grandchildren for the day. It prompted some research on anchors!
One important function of an anchor is to provide help during a storm at sea. If sailors are not able to navigate round a storm, they will drop anchor. As the anchor fastens into the seabed, the line keeps the bow of the ship facing into the wind and waves, preventing the ship being hit broadside with the possibility of capsizing. Then sailors batten down the hatches and weather the storm.
The anchor needs to be fastened securely into the seabed, preventing the storm driving the ship onto rocks.
We all face storms in our lives at times. There are seasons when forward progress is difficult or impossible, and we need to drop anchor and sit out the storm.
For us as Christians, our firm rock and anchor is Jesus Christ and his teachings. In Hebrews 6:19 Paul speaks about a hope we have, which is an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
In a storm at this moment? Then let down the anchor. Or to put it another way, put on the full armour of God and stand firm. Ephesians 6:10.
