Death Has Lost Its Sting

May 12th, 2009

I still miss my ‘little’ brother John. 12 years younger than me, it is now over 6 years since he suddenly left us.  He would have been here with us today, searching out any visitors to make them welcome, and then worshipping God with his hands high in the air.

Life is fragile.  Heather and I were at a neighbour’s funeral last week, and we have another this week.  On Wednesday we heard the tragic news of the murder of members of the family of Joyce Meyer’s bodyguard.

But we are not people who grieve like the rest of people who have no hope.  We believe that Jesus died and rose again.  How comforting it is to know that the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ guarantees resurrection to eternal life for all those who have put their trust in Christ.  He told his followers that he was going away to prepare a place for them.  There will come a time when we will be with the Lord for ever.  Paul instructs us to encourage one another with these words.

Many questions remain about the nature of heaven and of our resurrected bodies, but as Paul tells the Christians in Corinth: ‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those that love him’.

Resurrection is the bedrock of our faith.  Death has been swallowed up in victory.
