Solid Rock
November 4th, 2008
Will it be Lewis Hamilton or Filipe Massa in Brazil this afternoon? Will it be Barack Obama or John McCain on Tuesday? Can the fighting in the Congo be quelled? Finances remain unstable globally. Uncertainty abounds. What is going to happen next? On what can we depend?
Russell Brand has gone; Jonathan Ross is suspended, but will the BBC change? The BBC knows that its future depends on connecting with the next generation of potential licence payers, with whom there is broad support for Brand and Ross.
Are prudent budgeting, politeness, honesty and truth now only the domain of the old and staid? And what about the shape of church? How should it change for a changing generation? What is cultural and fluid? What is timeless, rock and solid?
We should not be harping back necessarily to the standards and values of previous generations. No, the solid rock on which we can depend - and need to check out again - are the words and teachings, the values and attitudes, of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
