Return of the King
We saw the Queen this week. We were walking past Buckingham Palace at about 9.00 pm Monday night. It was cold and damp. There weren’t many people about. Suddenly, lots of blue flashing lights appeared in the distance, but there were no sirens. A police motorcyclist drew up alongside us. To our amazement and amusement, he got out a whistle and blew it profusely, like a football referee, signalling all the traffic to stop.
The royal Bentley limousine, immaculate, with no number plate, but internally illuminated clearly highlighting the Queen and Prince Philip, sped by and on through the gates of Buckingham Palace, followed by several other vehicles and police outriders. We looked at each other. That was the Queen! We weren’t expecting that!
We are to be ready for the return of the King at any time. But he won’t come un-noticed or un-announced. Matthew says that all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call.
We are to keep watch, not knowing when he will come. With the world seemingly heading into further crisis, let us not be naïve and think that life will necessarily just carry on as usual. The King’s return may well be imminent, and we need to be busy about God’s work and not caught napping.
